From the Streets of Bihar to the Driver’s Seat in Delhi: Umair’s Road to Dignity

Fourteen years ago, Umair left his home in Araria, Bihar, with nothing but a suitcase and a promise to find a better life in the bustling capital of Delhi. Like millions of others, he sought a livelihood that could sustain his family back home. But for over a decade, that “promising” life felt out of reach. Surviving on a meager salary that barely covered the basics, Umair found himself trapped in a cycle of earning just enough to survive, but never enough to grow.

The turning point came when Masawat Livelihood Foundation stepped in with a different kind of map for Umair’s journey.

With targeted livelihood support, Umair transitioned from a struggling employee to a proud entrepreneur. He is now the owner and operator of his own E-Rickshaw. This shift into self-employment didn’t just change his daily routine; it revolutionized his reality. His monthly income has seen a significant jump to ₹21,000, providing a level of financial breathing room he hadn’t known in fourteen years.

“Now we live with dignity,” Umair shares, his voice reflecting the pride of a father who can finally provide. “Our living standards have improved, we can afford healthcare, and my kids are getting a better education.”

Umair’s story is a powerful reminder that sometimes, the only thing standing between a hardworking person and a better life is the right tool at the right time. Today, as he navigates the streets of Delhi, he isn’t just driving a vehicle—he’s driving his family toward a brighter, more secure future.
